How to Develop Thicker Skin for Work

Job Dragon Job Dragon : March 15, 2021

Thick skin is something you'll need to survive in today's diverse workforce. You must be able to handle working with various abrasive personalities without allowing it to affect your mental health. The following are tips for teaching yourself to be tougher at work:

Focus on Your Paycheck

It might be difficult for you at first, but you need to focus on the most important reason you show up for work every day: to earn pay that will take care of you and your family. Think about your next successful bill payment, or your weekly reward every time one of your coworkers makes you feel like giving up.

Don't Take It Personally

Don't ever take another person's criticism, gossip, or negative behavior personally. People learn most of their negative behaviors long before they start working, and they have a hard time letting go of those habits. Workplaces house a multitude of people in between their four walls for each work shift. You may get stuck dealing with workers who have poor upbringings or maladaptive behavioral patterns. They have little to do with you as a person, however. Remember that it's not your fault and take action if the behavior is prohibited by law.

Think of Work as School

The chances are high that you had to deal with high school or grade-school bullies at one point. Work can sometimes seem like an adult version of high school. You probably learned that most bullies were either jealous of something you had or picked on you because they thought you were weak. It's the same at work, and you can use the same tactics to diffuse the problems. Let your amazing personality shine, continue to work hard, and don't allow anyone else's words or actions to dictate how you feel about yourself.

You should start to see some changes in your attitude after trying these tactics for a significant time. Everything will work out for you if you get a firm grasp on what's most important.
